Built for Privacy, Designed for Kids

By Chris Hazelton ·

Parental controls shouldn't feel like surveillance

I spent years in mobile security, helping big companies protect their employees' phones. One lesson stuck with me: the moment people feel watched, trust breaks down. That's true for employees, and it's even more true for kids.

A lot of parental control apps start from the opposite place. They track locations, log every app, read messages and send parents a daily report card. Kids figure that out fast, and the relationship turns into a game of cat and mouse.

When I started building Pausii, I made two promises. First, Pausii protects your family's privacy by design, not by policy. Second, kids should be part of the process, not the target of it.

Privacy by design: built on Apple, stored in your iCloud

Pausii is built entirely on Apple's own Screen Time frameworks, the same technology behind the Screen Time settings already on your iPhone. That choice does a lot of the privacy work for us.

Pause, not spy

Pausii does one thing: it pauses the apps you choose, and then it resumes them. That's it.

It doesn't track your child's location. It doesn't read their messages. It doesn't log their browsing history or send you a report on how many minutes they spent in each app. Those tools exist, and some families need them. Pausii isn't one of them.

We think the most useful parental control is the one that helps you make a call in the moment, like "dinner's ready" or "time for homework," without turning your kid's phone into a monitoring device. You get control over when, without surveillance over what.

Designed with kids, not against them

Privacy is half of trust. The other half is making sure kids are never left guessing. My twins helped design Pausii, and they taught me that kids don't mind screen time ending nearly as much as they mind it ending without warning.

So Pausii is built to keep kids in the loop:

Kids who understand the rules, and help shape them, push back a lot less. In our house, that's turned screen time from a standoff into a routine.

Control over when, without surveillance over what.

Trust works both ways

Parents need to trust that a tool won't collect more than it should. Kids need to trust that the rules are fair and that nobody is reading over their shoulder. Pausii is built so both can be true at once.

Respect your family's privacy. Give kids a heads-up and a say. Then let the pause do its job: get everyone off their screens and back to each other.

Pause games. Resume life.

Be one of the first families to try Pausii.
